Leon Springs Fire Chief honored at 30th anniversary

Chief Bob Hardenstine of the Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Department was surprised Wednesday night when he showed up for a regularly scheduled training meeting to find over 70 people waiting to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his joining the department.
Attending the celebration were his wife Sharon, his son John, fire department members and their families, fire department board members, Emergency Service District board members, and firefighters from neighboring communities Grey Forest and Shavano Park.
“Chief Hardenstine has seen Leon Springs Fire Department grow from a small single station department with a single pumper and a brush truck to one of the larger suburban departments soon to have four stations,” said Steve Biediger, LSVFD public relations.
Leon Springs now has four engines, three brush trucks, three medical rescue units, a large swiftwater team and a hazmat and W.M.D. team.
Hardenstine joined the Leon Springs fire department in 1978 as a training officer. Three years later he was elected chief, and he has been re-elected every year since.
At the celebration, which included a catered turkey dinner, the chief was presented with a statue commemorating his 30 years of distinguished service to the citizens of Leon Springs, Fair Oaks Ranch and Bexar County.
Sharon Hardenstine was also honored for her continued dedication and commitment to the department over the last 30 years.
“There is one other person who made this possible”, said Bob Hardenstine as he called to his wife. Then he asked that everyone give a round of applause to the spouses of the fire department members who support them while they are out serving others.
The evening was complete when the chief was congratulated “over the air” by the Bexar County Fire dispatcher.
